1. Essential oil and Black Death
In 1603,the second outbreak of the Black Death, the epidemic is very serious. It killed about over twenty-four million Europeans lives. According to Many historical records, we could find when the spread of the plague at that time, who was working in a perfume factory, botanical gardens, gardeners, Leather workers, etc., due to they frequently contacted with essential oils, their chances of suffering from the disease is much lower than the other people. It proved that essential oil does have an antibacterial effect, and therefore the plant aromatherapy has become popular in Europe. At that time in France, Dr. Charles de Lorme invented a protective clothing, body be covered with leather robe, people wore the mask, it looks like a long beak-shaped mask,which be filled with the fragrance plants, by these plants to filter the air. The gauze inside the mask be covered with cloves, cardamom and other antibacterial essential oils for fighting bacteria. At that time, he also taught people to use herb over the streets, and put their feet to rub those plants for extracting these essence and aroma. |
2.The father of modern aromatherapy
During World War I, a French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse, he burned his hand in the lab accidentally , in such urgent situation,he put injured hand into pure lavender essential oil.To his surprise his skin is said to have healed quickly and without scarring.It is believed that he may have experimented by using them at military hospitals with injured First World War soldiers. Gattefosse created the "Aromatherapie" this new term in the "oil therapy" works, and using this term to promote "aromatherapy". He is widely regarded as the father of modern aromatherapy and influenced many French physicians to use his methods. |
